What Others Say About When Jesus Calls
A Timeless Tale of Unconditional Love
When Jesus Calls is the debut novel from Martha Gayle. Simply put, the book is a powerful work of fiction. Mary’s story seemed so true, that you almost forget that you are reading fiction. Steeped in Scripture and filled with grace, it is a masterpiece that moves beyond allegory to touch the reader a the deepest level where faith is born. I wonder how much of Mary’s story is actually borrowed from Martha’s life. Mary, in one way or another, is every person who has ever lived without love. Yet she finds love and fulfillment in her relationship with Jesus Christ. This novel transcends mere storytelling, weaving a narrative rich with themes of forgiveness, grace, and the relentless nature of divine love. You cannot read this book and not be changed. I look forward to the sequel.

Book: When Jesus Calls
In today’s world, times are very trying. I was given this book by a very dear friend of mine. She told me Martha Gayle had visited our church and wanted her to handout some of her books. I’m sorry to say I didn’t meet her the first time she came. However, this past Sunday I had the pleasure of meeting her and Jim both. Simply amazing people full of God’s love. Book: When Jesus Calls
Martha Gayle’s When Jesus Calls is a heartfelt Christian fiction novel that follows the emotional and spiritual journey of Mary, a woman seeking healing, purpose, and a deeper connection with Jesus after a string of personal heartbreaks. The story unfolds through Mary’s inner reflections, her work at a charming inn, her close friendships, and her life-changing decisions, like buying a cottage by the sea and choosing forgiveness over bitterness. Along the way, Mary grapples with past wounds, discovers the redemptive power of faith, and learns how to let Jesus guide her life.
I found myself emotionally invested in Mary’s story from the very first chapter. Gayle’s writing isn’t flashy, but it’s deeply sincere. She writes with a raw honesty that makes you feel like you’re sitting with a friend who’s laying their heart bare. Her style is intimate, plainspoken, and brimming with warmth. There’s no pretense, just a genuine voice telling a story grounded in love, loss, and the quiet call of God. I admired how Mary’s spiritual insights came through lived experiences, not sermons. It didn’t feel like I was being preached at. Instead, I was invited to reflect right alongside her, which made the story more powerful and real for me.
What stood out most was the emotional depth and vulnerability. I felt Mary’s loneliness. I understood her ache for love, her longing for peace, and her deep need for meaning. Gayle doesn’t gloss over the hard stuff—betrayal, temptation, self-doubt—but instead shows how grace meets us in the middle of the mess. I loved the supporting characters. Mr. Henry, the inn’s general manager, especially touched me. His quiet faith journey and the kindness he showed others brought tears to my eyes more than once. The book reminded me how much we all need community and how God can speak through the people around us.
When Jesus Calls is a quiet reminder that healing is possible, faith is alive, and we’re never too far gone to be called back home. I’d recommend this book to anyone who’s been through heartbreak, who’s questioning their faith, or who just needs a gentle story that breathes hope.

Book: When Jesus Calls
An expression of faith through storytelling, Gayle’s work combines scripture with how to apply it in the earthly world. The main character, Mary, acts as the conduit through which audiences can see the power of prayer and love for Jesus Christ manifested in her daily actions and experiences.
In her earlier years, there is a stark contrast between the carefree Mary who goes camping with her father and the one who fails to guard her heart, leading to betrayal and heartbreak. As the layers of pain and despair pile on, Mary finds herself walking away from her savior, and it is only truly when she walks in on her then-husband having an affair that she understands that true, unconditional love only comes from the love of the Lord, and all else in the world is part and parcel of his boundless love.
Through prayer and relentless faith, Mary experiences the presence of incredible companions, chiefly her adorable pet JJ, who seems nothing short of a timely blessing meant to bring Mary’s focus squarely on prayer and devotion. Prayer brings her the perfect oceanside home of serenity to write her book, a meaningful escape from isolation with a friend like Tiffany, and an incredible job as the sales and marketing coordinator for an inn with an empathetic boss like Mr. Henry.
Overall, Gayle expertly weaves in scripture that fits in seamlessly with the narrative, helping audiences break complex ideas into digestible pieces through anecdotes. Throughout, themes of friendship, chastity, and persistence ring true. The path to Christ is not going to be a smooth one, but it’s tried and true, with faith in the Lord paving the path to mortal and eternal bliss. Easy to understand and follow, Gayle’s book creates a strong connection between readers and Mary, in whom audiences can see themselves and their own journey.

Book: When Jesus Calls
When Jesus Calls is a heartfelt novel that explores the themes of faith, forgiveness, and resilience through the journey of its protagonist, Mary. Written with grace and sincerity, author Martha Gayle captures the complexities of human emotions and the power of divine intervention in a life riddled with pain and betrayal. Mary faces a tumultuous life that diverges sharply from her plans. Her marriage, marked by betrayal, leaves her bitter and heartbroken. In her struggle to cope, she initially turns away from her faith, relying on her own understanding instead of seeking God’s guidance. This decision sets her on a path of self-reliance that ultimately leads her further away from the solace she truly needs. The narrative takes a turn as Mary immerses herself in her career as a sales and marketing director at a popular resort, achieving success as a best-selling author. Despite her professional accomplishments, she feels an unshakable void in her heart. Becoming a single mother challenges her faith deeply, testing her faith. Mary’s life undergoes a remarkable transformation as her desire to follow Jesus becomes a central theme, highlighting her internal conflict and gradual spiritual awakening. As she navigates her trials, Jesus offers her forgiveness and strength. Through these experiences, Mary learns the importance of depending on Jesus and the necessity of forgiveness, both for herself and others. Gayle eloquently portrays Mary’s struggle, as advised in Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This biblical wisdom resonates throughout the story, emphasizing the importance of spiritual vigilance. Mary’s realization that her Savior will never fail her and that all things work together for His glory is a powerful message that underpins the entire novel. When Jesus Calls is not just a story about personal redemption through the acceptance of Jesus Christ; it is also a commentary on the imperfections of family dynamics and the beauty of unexpected love. The narrative gracefully navigates through themes of drama, conflict, and brokenness, offering a nuanced perspective on human relationships. The book’s portrayal of Mary’s daily walk and relationship with her Heavenly Father is inspiring. When Jesus Calls is a beautifully told story of faith and the redemptive power of God’s love. It is a must-read for anyone seeking inspiration and a deeper understanding of the transformative power of faith. The novel’s emphasis on forgiveness, both given and received, and the unexpected gifts of love and beauty in life, make it a profound and uplifting read.

A beautiful story of Life and Redemption
Book: When Jesus Calls
Mary is a beautiful person. Like all of us, she wants to be her best for Christ, but she’s not perfect. And when she makes a mistake, God does miraculous things in her life when she is willing to repent and ask for forgiveness!
Imagine what He can do in all of us!? I can’t wait for Martha’s next book, so that I can hear the rest of Mary’s story!

Excellent
Book: When Jesus Calls
I love the way Mary is grateful for every good and perfect gift from the Father. I love the struggle and joy of listening to the Holy Spirit, even when we mess up. What a mighty and loving God! I love how many scriptures you included and especially the list at the end! This book magnifies God that Mary’s faith is in Jesus and, not because of what we’ve done, but what he did at the cross and is still doing today. Recommended for anyone, believer or not.

Book: When Jesus Calls
In Martha Gayle’s book, ‘When Jesus Calls’, Martha walks us through Mary’s life and all that she goes through and her dependence on the Lord. Scripture references are abundant and applicable for our walk.
I was blessed to meet Martha Gayle this year in a very personal way. I made sure I got the book first, as I knew that much of content was about her life. The love towards the Lord you see in the book is more than real! Martha has a heart that is big as Texas, (as they say). And her book expresses her heart. Spending time with Martha (and Jimmie) has been a highlight of my life – no one has ever shown me more kindness. Read ‘When Jesus Calls’, you won’t be sorry.

What Others Say About When Jesus Leads
Martha Gayle's beautiful sequel of Faith
As much as I loved her first book, When Jesus Calls, I love, love, love her second book, When Jesus Leads. Martha’s story is such an inspirational story, so perfect to start the new year out with. She writes from the true goodness from her soul. In this book you really get to know Mary and Jimmy’s families, the parts they play in their lives, and the beautiful relationship between Mary and Elizabeth is precious. The entire story throughout the book is so sweet, sincere and inspiring. The Bible scriptures were strategically placed throughout the story as Mary found her comfort in Jesus. They were always so encouraging. I couldn’t put the book down, and I didn’t want it to end. I will reread her first two books while waiting for the third one!

Life Lessons
Book: When Jesus Leads
Martha Gayle has a gift with putting her heart on paper. Her descriptions of the people, homes, and situations, cause you to feel as though you’re right there, on the beach, in the cottage, at that Italian restaurant, or inside the Inn.
What a blessing to be able to share in this journey of her life.
We all have a story to tell. And we should tell them. As 2 Corinthians 1:4 reads – I have been comforted by seeing how God comforted and helped Martha in each situation.
It will be time well spent to work the reading of these books into your day and life.
Thank you Martha for penning the journey of your life.

Book: When Jesus Leads
Martha Gayle’s When Jesus Leads is a heartfelt and faith-driven novel that follows the journey of Mary, a woman navigating love, trust, and obedience to God in the face of uncertainty. The story unfolds with Mary grappling with her emotions, questioning her choices, and ultimately surrendering her path to divine guidance. At the heart of the novel is her complicated relationship with Jimmy, a man with a troubled past, and her struggle to reconcile her feelings with what she believes God is asking of her. Alongside Mary’s personal journey, the book explores themes of redemption, forgiveness, and unwavering faith, all tied together with a strong sense of community and heartfelt relationships.
I was drawn into Mary’s story from the start. There’s something deeply relatable about her hesitation, the internal tug-of-war between fear and faith. One of my favorite moments was when she sat in her office, staring at the storm outside, realizing that life’s storms can be just as unpredictable. The writing makes these moments come alive, and I found myself feeling her anxiety, her longing for clarity, and her quiet strength. The book does a great job of showing that following Jesus doesn’t always mean an easy road, it’s often full of doubt, tough choices, and sacrifices.
What I appreciated most was the authenticity of Mary’s struggle with Jimmy. When Mary wrestles with the question of whether Jimmy is the right person for her and Elizabeth, it feels real. She’s not just swept up in romance, she’s cautious, protective of her daughter, and determined to listen for God’s direction. The moment when she reads Jimmy’s parents’ letter declining to come to his birthday party was gut-wrenching, it showed just how deep the wounds of addiction can go. And yet, Mary’s choice to love him anyway, in whatever way God calls her to, is a powerful testament to grace.
Then there’s the curveball: Michael, Elizabeth’s biological father, suddenly reappears after years of absence. The box he sends, filled with a letter and an unexpected child support check, adds another layer of emotional complexity. Her emotions are raw and justified—how does someone just walk back in after nearly a decade? Yet, instead of focusing solely on bitterness, the book gently steers toward the power of forgiveness. It doesn’t force an easy answer, which I respected. Instead, it lets Mary sit with the weight of her choices, showing how forgiveness is a process, not an instant reaction.
When Jesus Leads is a touching and emotionally rich novel that will resonate deeply with readers who appreciate faith-centered stories about love, second chances, and trusting God’s plan. If you enjoy books with strong moral themes, uplifting messages, and characters who feel like real people struggling with real faith, this one is for you.

Book: When Jesus Leads
Martha Gayle’s When Jesus Leads is a heartfelt story of faith, redemption, and divine guidance. As the sequel to When Jesus Calls, it continues the journey of Mary and Jimmy, two individuals whose lives take unexpected turns through the power of God’s love. With a touching and sincere narrative, Gayle illustrates how trusting in Jesus can bring healing and transformation.
At its core, When Jesus Leads is about surrender—learning to trust in God’s plan even when the path feels uncertain. Mary struggles with doubt, questioning whether she is truly following God’s will, while Jimmy battles to overcome his past struggles with addiction. Through their journeys, Gayle highlights the boundless nature of God’s grace, reminding readers that no one is beyond redemption. The novel also emphasizes the power of Christian community. Jimmy’s renewal is not just a personal battle but one shaped by the love and support of those around him. His relationship with Mary, deeply rooted in faith, demonstrates how love can overcome life’s obstacles when placed in God’s hands.
Gayle’s prose is simple yet emotionally resonant. She weaves scripture into the narrative seamlessly, reinforcing the book’s spiritual themes without feeling forced. While the story occasionally leans into sentimentality, it remains genuine, offering encouragement to those seeking strength in their own faith journeys.
Told with a reflective and intimate tone, the novel often feels more like a personal testimony than a traditional work of fiction. Mary’s inner thoughts and prayers guide the reader through her struggles and victories. Her story is one of faith in action—of wanting to follow God’s lead while facing fear and uncertainty. Her daughter, Elizabeth, provides another perspective, voicing the concerns of a loved one witnessing faith-driven choices unfold.
Jimmy’s transformation is one of the novel’s most powerful elements. His past mistakes and his commitment to change highlight the profound impact of grace. His story is a testament to the power of redemption, showing that no one is too broken for God’s love.
With honesty and sincerity, Gayle delivers a moving and faith- affirming story. When Jesus Leads is a compelling read for those seeking hope and a reminder of God’s unwavering love.

Where Jesus Leads
Book: When Jesus Leads
Where Jesus Leads!
Ahhh, Martha Gayle! Such an author that has such a heartfelt, down to earth way of relating her story that everyone who reads her books can understand and feel for the characters. She is able to intertwine the reader with the characters and ….. in a soft but powerfully strong way interacts them with Jesus so that they want what “Mary” in the book has, despite her struggles, etc. That is a strong secure point about Martha’s stories… how she makes the readers want what her characters have in Jesus!! . And I know the author personally—- that’s exactly what she has with the Lord! In real life!!! “Where Jesus Leads” is so beautifully written and Martha writes on paper the very soul of her heart. The characters become real friends to the readers! Both of Martha’s books have been a joy from beginning to end and I cannot wait to read the third one!
